All you need to know about Tomatoes

Sowing, growing and eating………..

Tomato

If there is one salad plant that has grown massively over the last few years with amateur gardeners it is the tomato. In hanging baskets, pots on the patio, in a small or large greenhouse and even in a small space in a garden border, with a little bit of nurturing you can have the tastiest and freshest of tomatoes on your plate. I guarantee that once you have tasted home grown tomatoes straight off the vine, sweet, juicy, and full of flavour, you will never want to eat the run of the mill mass grown supermarket produce again.

How to grow Tomatoes

In order to grow tomatoes, you will first need to understand the two types:

Determinate: These plants have a fixed height and are bred to stop growing at a certain height. They are often referred to as bush varieties and once they are mature they will produce a large flush of fruit which will begin ripening over a period of time but no new fruit will subsequently be produced. These varieties are often used in hanging baskets or patio pots and containers due to their compact nature. You DO NOT need to pinch out any of the side shoots on these types of plant.

Indeterminate: Often known as ‘cordon types’ these plants grow a main stem off which the fruit trusses are borne. If the plant is not stopped the tomato will keep growing in length (much like a grape vine) which is why they are often referred to as ‘vine tomatoes‘. These varieties will give you a much longer growing season  and a steady supply of fruit. They do take a little longer to fruit than the bush variety as they are putting a lot of energy into growing tall.  This is why it is best to allow 5 sets of branches to develop and then snip off the top of the main plant to stop any more growth. Don’t worry this will still give you lots of tomatoes!  You will also need to ‘stake’ your tomato plants with a cane for support as the branches will become quite heavy once the trusses of tomatoes appear and start ripening.

Growing: You can either grow your own plants from seed or buy ready grown plants at your local garden centre.
