All you need to know about Oregano

Sowing, growing and eating………..

Oregano

(Osimum basilicum)

Although Basil is often thought of as a Mediterranean herb, it’s origins stem from India and the Middle East. However today it is strongly associated with dishes from Italy, Greece and other Mainland Western European culinary dishes.

Basil is an annual plant

How to grow Oregano

As a Mediterranean herb, basil requires sun and heat to both germinate and to grow, and careful attention once growing.

Basil is best grown in cells in the greenhouse and then pot on the ‘plugs’ into pots, or you can sow directly into pots. (See our seed growing blog).

Both as seedlings and also when potted on Basil should always be watered from the base of the plant. If watered from the top of the plant the tender stems of basil can rot. It is the roots that need the moisture for healthy plants, and this encourages the roots to grow and search out the moisture at the base of the plant.

Basil should be watered sparingly; little but often is classic with this herb, although do not allow them to dry out completely.

Varieties of Oregano

Sweet Basil

Sometimes known as ‘Sweet Genovese’, one of the most common and popular basil varieties. It has a wonderful basil fragrance a little bit likes cloves and incense combined and is great in the kitchen for all salads and especially tomato dishes. It is also the traditional basil for making pesto. (See our recipes below for homemade pesto and other uses for basil).

Greek Basil

Greek and Bush Basil are very similar. Both are small compact plants with heads packed with very small leaves. Fantastic on pizzas where the leaves can just be stripped of the stalk with no need for tearing.

This basil also makes a great houseplant both for decoration, fragrance, but as a bonus it keeps the flies away. Great in summer.
